Review from Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s production of, Mother of Us All.

Director Susan Stone Li has fearlessly taken the charge in bringing these characters and this story to life. Stein’s writing in “The Mother of Us All” is whimsical and includes heaps of wordplay. This leaves much room for interpretation, and Susan Stone Li has opened the door for each singer to share his/her personal thoughts. She then combines them with her own vision to create a cohesive unit. I have never put a show together in such a short amount of time so it is exciting to see how Susan can give broad directions and still inspire specific actions. At times, one group is rehearsing on stage while another group receives their blocking notes for the next scene. Somehow, Susan seems to have eyes and ears everywhere to make the adjustments and provide the direction needed.

Impetuous love, the romance of Paris and the pain of regret unfold in one of the world's greatest love stories. Poet Rodolfo, played by Scott Quinn, and Mimì, played by Natalya Romaniw, meet by chance in his atelier and fall immediately in love. They weather break-ups and inevitable reunions, but their love proves as fragile as the light of a single candle when they confront the realities of bohemian life.

Directed by Susan Li, based on Houston Grand Opera's new production by John Caird. Conductor Eric Melear leads the cast, Houston Grand Opera Orchestra and the Houston Grand Opera Chorus.

This is a ticketed event for the covered seating area. Free tickets are available (four per person over age 16 while they last) at the Miller Outdoor Theatre box office the day of the performance between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
